11:25 am: Civic duty
I had jury duty today. It turned out to be a lot of waiting and then all the potential jurors were released from service due to the defendant being too intoxicated to participate in his/her own trial.

Yeah, probably another drunk driver pulled-over by the State Patrol on the way back from gambling. That seems to be the only crimes we ever get up here. The people don't even live here, they just go to casinos on the edge of the county, get wasted, drive, endanger everyone else's lives, and then citizens in this small county get called up to hear all their excuses as they try to weasel-out of what they did. Not that I'd assume anyone was guilty in those DUI cases, I'd listen to the evidence, but they're ALL DUIs. All the jurors were joking about that, most of us get called in every year or two.

Just like that meme...they had ONE JOB!

One can only hope that the next jury might hear about it, and if they drove to court, they were arrested for that, too. The person has a big problem with alcohol, and apparently merely getting arrested for DUI didn't serve as a wakeup call.

At the very least, there should be some sort of default penalty, like sending the individual straight to rehab.

I've done it 4 or 5 times where I live, once even got to hear some case involving a property dispute, then was dismissed by the judge himself because a settlement had been reached. I actually kind of enjoy it-like a one day crash course in law- except for having to get up early to go there, that part sucks.

No coffee, no internet, no electronic devices were allowed in court, so I left my phone in the car. It was a rather tedious 3hh wait in the community room, while the judge and lawyers figured-out if the defendant was fit to stand trial.

I actually was hoping to be selected, the judge led us on a bit, saying how it was a "complex case" and how 8 witnesses were to be called. It sounded at first like it wasn't going to be a DUI, but something more interesting. And then, at the end of the wait, the judge called us all in to the courtroom briefly to explain the situation and then dismissed everyone. In light of the defendant's drunkeness, and how nearly all the cases are DUI, I am making a bit of an assumption...

Obviously, I have more fun where I am, even in jury duty :P
